The engine is an evinrude 140hp v4 from the 80's, and this spark plug is the type without the curved metal bit that runs from the bottom of the thread to the centre conductor/thingy. Is this accurate information??? I can't give model or serial numbers for a couple of weeks as I haven't picked the motor up yet. Thanks

Champion QL77JC4 would be the optimal plug for your engine (if you have the newer style ignition). L77JC4 for older style ignition.

For every die-hard that says use only Champion, you will find one that says run only NKG....or something else. Tash is right. OMC for most years of the era specified both Champion and AC. The main thing is to get the RIGHT one of whichever brand. A lot of those older motors came with surface gap plugs that didn't work worth a hoot. It's best to check with somebody that knows what he is talking about. hoeser is right. What galls me is the plug charts that specify whatever they have that fits the hole.
