NGK Iridium Plugs

Has anyone tried using NGK Iridium plugs in their Ficht motor. I've been looking them over for several weeks now, but really not sure if they are safe to try. I'm running a 98 150 Ficht and NGK claims that plug PZFR6H will work. <br /><br /> NGK Link

I think you'll find that insulator contamination by oil is what will kill your spark plug rather than electrode wear. So copper electrodes will give you the same longetevity as iridium.<br />Johnson/Evinrude engines are well known to work with Champion sparkplugs better than anything else. I doubt you'll find anyone here that prefers to use Champions generally, but everyone will recomend you use them in these engines.<br /><br />Good luck!

Is your 150 updated with the "pinned" heads? If so, use the XC12PEP Champions indexed and gapped at .028"

Never had a problem with Champions and seahorse is dead on. Just read an article on that a few days ago. From what they said, the Ficht motor plugs MUST be indexed.

I just read the links that Rickdb1boat posted and they have some wrong information in them.<br /><br />The iboats forum link has someone saying to use QC12PEP plugs in a 150 which is incorrect. A 150 with the "pinned" heads uses the XC12PEP sparkplug.<br /><br />On the indexing explanation, they say to torque the plug up to 30 ft.-lbs., that is also wrong. Do not exceed 22 ft-lbs on those plugs.

Thanks for clearing that up seahorse. Don't want to misinform someone. Like I said, these are just articles I read. Experience is much better!

I appreciate all of the info. I'll just stay with the champion plugs. One issue that I'm not very clear on is the indexing. The PDF file shows the gapped end pointing toward the injector and is showing the updated pinned heads as an example. I'm guessing that the pins are to help deflect the fuel to away from the plug. That makes sense. My 150 has the orininal heads and I know when I purchased the rig from a freind of mine, he did state that with the old style heads, the open end of the plug should point away from the injector. I'm guessing that the idea was to used the back side of the plug to deflect the fuel and slow down the fouling. I currently have the plugs indexed with the open end of the J-Plug toward the injector. I just wanted to double check this procedure to make sure that I'm doing it correctly.<br /><br />Thanks for all the help...

Jerry,<br /><br />All FICHTS need the open end of the gap to be within 90 degrees either side of facing the injector. You want the fuel spray to go thru the spark gap for better ignition. Indexing is really easy once you do it. Torque all the plugs to 15# first, then any that are not in the correct position (within 90 degrees) will work in the opposite bank.<br /><br />The "pins" in the 60 degree motor are positoned to deflect the fuel spray from hitting the hot ceramic nose of the sparkplug, but the pins are the correct lenght to allow the fuel spray thru the gap.

Do they use shims on the plugs or do you change the torque on ones that don't hit the window?

NO SHIMS!!! You torque the plug from 15 to 22 ft.lbs. - if it doesn't line up within 90 degrees of either side of the injector nozzle, then it will on the opposite bank. That is all there is to indexing on the FICHTS.
