NGK's in 88 SPL?

Howdy Folks,
I went to check my plugs and decided they needed changing. The local autozone sold me some replacements for the Champions in the boat but they were NGK's. The boat runs fine but it seems I didn't gain the gas mileage I normally do when changing the plugs. It always seemed it used less gas for the first few boatrides. Should only Champions go in an Evinrude?

I certainly cannot speak for Evinrude, But I can vouch for NGK as a fine spark plug. I have had no problems, and even ask for them by name if possible when replacing mine.

This would be an interesting discussion, I'd like to hear what others have experienced, if anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks, I just thought somewhere way back in time I heard not to use ANYTHING but Champions in Evinrudes.

Re: NGK's in 88 SPL?

As a tech, I use Champions in OMC/Bombardier, and NGKs in Suz/Yam/Honda because the heat ranges do NOT correspond as much as the cross-reference suggests. I've replaced more than enough #1 pistons on Japanese engines using Champions, which is the basis for my thought. This does NOT demean either Champion or NGK. Just that you'll get better performance (and lifetime) if you stick with the original...

Evinrude / Johnson = Champions in my book.
