I've now finished (with the help of this forum) the overhaul od a 94 evinrude 115 crossflow. Rebored, overhauled carbs, bearings seals, etc. I'm an X car mechanic, and can assure everyone that I do double check things (experience gave me a lack of desire to tear things apart again ;) . I'm currently trying to get it started. I've done a sinc and link as per info in Clymer manual and timmed with info from these forums. Spark is real good, fresh gas in the tank, and 120lbs of compression. I've got what I believe to be a good pulse going on from the crankcase to the vro, and have checked that fuel is getting to the carbs. But I just can't get it to run. Cranking with the key pushed in has no effect. It will crank along for a minute with narry a pop. The best I've been able to do is a few second run after misting gas into the carbs. Anyone have some advise of where to look next? Also. The power pack is a new CDI and the coils are also new :(

Sounds very much like a fuel problem as she runs when fuel squirted into carbs. A few pointers to check would be crankcase seals leaking so not enough vacuum is created to pull fuel into casing, reed valves stuffed allowing blow-out, carbs not getting any fuel or carbs blocked.

Good luck

The seals were replaced, as were the reed valves. As I mentioned, the engine has 120 lbs of compression. Is there any way to check vacume?

I would start checking the obvious things in the carb. Review your link and sync and make sure that's OK. Did you replace the float valves and reset the float adjustments when you cleaned the carbs? Does the fuel bulb pump up tight? Do the floats leak gas when you pump the bulb? It sounds as though there isn't any fuel getting into the engine. Either its not getting to the carb or its not getting through the carbs. Does your choke or primer system function correctly? How exactly did you rebuild the carbs? When you squirt pre-mix into the carb throats and the engine fires, try choking it and see if you can get it to run a little. Are you giving it any throttle while you try and start it? I know its a lot of questions but it seems to me that its going to be something minor that you have overlooked.

Does this engine have a choke butterfly or one of those "primer" systems. While you have the carb airboxes off, try holding you hands over the carb throats to choke it manually with your hands while somebody else cranks it. Does it fire then?

I rebuilt the carbs with purchased kits, and set the float level to info provided with them. The fuel bulb pumps up hard, and the solenoid primer is working correctly. I'm still trying to figure out how to check to seee it it has propor vacume as this would effect both the fuel pump operation and the draw throught the carbs.

Hold your hand over the carb throat and crank the motor. There should be enough vacumn to make your hand wet with fuel. Also, did you seal the bolts on the bottom bearing carrier. They need to be air tight too.

Thanks for the response. Yes the bottom bolts had both o-rings and I added a little gel seal to make sure. I got it runing, after rebuilding the VRO and tearing down the carbs and double checking. I found a restriction in the primer solenoid exit. It started, and I put the water to it. I then went to start it and it rotated a few degrees and THUD. I'm a 4 stroke mechanic, and knew immediately what that was. Im posting another subject under emergency help needed. Dirk
