Night Vision Monocular.....got your attention?

Hello all,
Okay lately I've been doing a lot of night fishing on large to medium sized lakes or out on the inner-costal waters down in Texas. When I'm boating around at top speed I usually navigate using my "one billion, trillion candle power spot light" to see where I'm going (as not to run into anything). The spot light I use only lights up the dark for a certain distance and also reflects off the boat and water. I was thinking that maybe I can get myself a "night vision" monocular. That way I don't have to fool with the spot light and I can see everything around me (so to speak). Have any of you tried this or recommend a brand/type of night vision monocular I can use for this?

First of all I would say that it's pretty brilliant of you to think like this. I would have never thought of that. Impressive.

I would be careful with any type of night vision equipment. Since it causes you "tunnel" vision, you wouldn't be able to see boats or objects off to the sides, unless you look directly at them, which would mean you aren't looking where you're going. Walking through the woods is one thing, driving a boat with them, another.

I think it's doable, but pretty freaky to think about! LOL

I would think, Unless you get a night vision hood, your going to be tunneled in what you can see, you will loose your side vision, which is very important when driving anything at night.

Another thing to remember when using night vision equipment, they magnify light, which could be a real problem if someone else on the water shines their million candle spotlight at you, which could damage your eyes..when I was in the service, we were very careful with night vision because of this..

Anyone else near you using a trillion-candlepower spot light? I'm thinking it would not be good to get hit with that while you're on night-vision.

Running at high speed at night with a big spot light.....there is just so much wrong here........

Time to go big business and get radar lol, but I wouldn't suggest the night vision idea either, Try investing in a spotlight that mounts on the bow

Okay......let me be a little more clearer. I guess some of you are misunderstanding me. When I say "boating around on a lake at top speed" I did not mean I'm reaching 80 to 90 mph. My boat is not a race boat, the fastest I've gotten it up to is about 30 mph. The issue about tunnel vision, if I do decide to use some kind of night vision....I'm not going to just stare straight ahead with no side to side movement. Anyway, just wanted some input on this. Doesn't seem like this idea will be well received. Just thinking out loud.

I guess the question needs to be asked:

Have you ever looked through a night vision device, I can tell you the stuff they sell at Cabelas and other stores are pretty poor, I have looked through the best of them and still found them lacking, and that was when I was was doing recon in the military in a combat zone, so it was a pretty important piece of equipment and the ones sold to the general consumer are very poor compared to what we had in the military..

I would suggest maybe visiting the local paint ball course and use some of their gear to actually see if it would be of benefit.

How about two spots, one mounted high, one mounted low. Or side by side like our cars.

Night vision devices greatly reduce peripheral vision. One of the most dangerous activities for military helicopter pilots is night exercises using night vision goggles and they have the best you can get.
