Nissan 30HP Start Procedure Needed

I have purchased a 2004 Nissan 30HP electric start with less than 50 hours. The spark plugs are new, and the battery terminals have been cleaned. The manual says to loosen the air vent screw on the tank, squeeze the bulb until it is firm, do not raise the Neutral warm-up lever when starting the engine, turn the key. Well, that doesn't work. I have to play with the Neutral warm-up lever to get any eventual results. Also have read online, that pushing in on the key while turning it will engage the choke. My motor manual does not address the choke. I wouldn't think that the choke would be required in the summer anyway. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. :)

I believe your model may be NSF30A. Please verify that. If so, you have a carbureted 4-stroke 30.

If it is indeed the 30A 4-stroke, it does not have a conventional push-to-choke solenoid. You will want some warm-up lever during starting. The auto-by-starter unit should handle starting enrichment as needed, and can be tested by applying 12v to it. If the rod moves (slowly) with 12v applied, it is working. If not, it needs replaced.

The newer 30 hp fuel-injected units do not need warm-up lever or choking, as the ECU handles enrichment and cold idle.

Yes, I have the NSF 30A. What do I need to do with the warm up lever? A few full stroke movements or positioning it halfway then turn the key? I have tried a number of various techniques without much success. It will eventually start but not as quickly as I would have expected. If I was pulling the rope to start it, I would have to take a break.
Thanx

That motor should start on the first pull, second pull if something is slightly out of whack, third pull if something is wrong. If it tales more than that, it's time to either start troubleshooting (with a Factory service manual) or get to a dealer.

The 30A should not need any warm-up lever if everything is working properly. The auto-by-starter assembly and related system should handle the starting enrichment, and should give you high idle as it warms up.

The warm-up lever opens the throttle part way. As you raise it, you will probably feel it come up freely for part of the travel, then require a little more effort. It's at that point that the "slack" is out of the control cable and linkages, and the lever is starting to open the throttle. That's all the warm-up lever does. Setting it just a hair above the "engagement point" may help warm starting on some motors, but again should not be needed on the 30A. Wiggling it up and down won't help starting, and in fact can cause flooding, since it will activate the accelerator pump (plunger) in the carb.

I would check the auto-by-starter system, or have a dealer look at it.

Thanx for the information. I might have to have a dealer check it out then.
