nissan 5hp 2cycle 1984 wont run at low rpms

Engine won't start unless throttle is fully open. After it starts I can not idle it down enough to get it in gear without it dying. Any ideas

You have to determine if the problem is related to the:

Fuel system

Ignition system

Mechanical system(s)

There is no shortcut, but generally the fuel system is the best place to start.
