Just bought a 2001 Nissan 9.8 that has electric start but the battery cables aren't there. If anyone has one w/ the electric start I'd greatly appreciate a pic or a description of what gauge cable and where they are hooked up to.

What is your model? I assume a previous owner had unwired the motor at the powerhead, rather than at the battery end. If it is an EF (tiller-only) model, is the starter push button switch still there? If it is an EP (remote) model, you will want the proper RC box and cables, otherwise, you will need to add an extra push button to operate the electric choke. In any event, the + battery cable goes to the starter solenoid, and the - cable goes to block ground. Cable size should be at least 10 gauge. If you make up your own cables, use real, marine cable, with individually-tinned strands, and use proper crimping and heat shrink techniques to reduce corrosion problems. Factory cables are heavier -- about 8 gauge -- for a little better performance margin -- less voltage drop while cranking.

You can review an exploded diagram of the motor at http://www.internetoutboards.com/PartsCatalogMenu.htm
