Hello,

I have a Nissan NS5B with spark but will not start. Will turn over for 5 seconds or so after a shot of starting fluid, but that's it.

Checked fuel line and filter and they appear okay. Gas mixed at 50:1 with 2 stroke out.

Motor looks clean, but has sat for a couple of years.

Thanks.

after sit for that amount of time things need to be done i'd put some 2 stroke oil in the spark plug hole and turn it over with plugs out to lubricate the cylinder. pull carbs and rebuild. change plugs. try to get power head runing before changing lower unit oil and water pump. as for the year i beleive those are numbered for like a period 87-93 ? if your just seeing if it will fire try closing the jet on the carb counting the revolutions and back out same amount this should let enough gas to flow if floats are'nt stuck.

Got 90 psi on compression test.

Externally the carb looks new. The motor is very clean, has good spark off a tester and does run for 5-10 secs. on starter fluid.

I think I will go with a new spark plug first. Any idea what the gap should be?

Thanks

If it runs on ether starting fluid, but not on its own, and assuming you are not trying to use "vintage" gas, you are not getting fuel. Period. Just because the carb looks nice outside does not mean it isn't varnished up inside.

In our shop, we would completely disassemble the carb, clean it properly, and see how that goes.

BTW, that starting fluid is VERY hard on the rings. I would suggest using gasoline in a spritz bottle instead of ether "start fluid".

First, lay off the starting fluid. You are starting the motor with a highly explosive fluid that has no oil/lubrication. Too much is not good for your motor. Get a windex bottle full of 50:1 two stroke oil/gas mix and use it instead. Try spraying it down the carb throat every time it wants to stall (or every 3-4 secs). if it surges/wants to run, you know you have a dirty carb.
