nla 165 fuel pump, maybe?

hi................ ok, so i wanna R&R my auto fuel pump this spring..

i seem to be gettin conflicting info when i bring up a fuel pump on various sites.... i'd like an oem fuel pump if i could get one. i think the oem # is 47585. it's nla from bam, but it replaced by 86234A4. is this the difference between a mercruiser part and a quiksilver part? the 86234A4 seems to be the most published number available.... is it a quiksilver part? i've also come up with superceded part numbers

so does anyone know before i call either bam, marinepowerservice, or dougrussell to see if i can figure out the facts on my fuel pump....

my engine serial number is 4164243. supposedly a 75 165 L6....

or, of course i could get me an aftermarket serria one here for much less dollars. don't know if it's less of a part or not...... generally, i guess i'd rather have oem if i could get it.....

there is also a pretty good range of price. with the 47585 from dougrussell for about $250, then the 86234A4 for about 145 and then aftermarket for about a hundie..... suggestions, recomendations, preferances? any clue what the oem part number is?

as long as the old one made output pressure and intake suction I would run it, if not I would convert it, while remaining USCG compliant, to electric.

same pump as a chevy II 2.5 liter..... not much to it. is the diaphram toast?

go to napa... get the auto equivelent....

if the new pump does not have the CG outlet for fuel over diaphram... just swap your upper housings onto the new fuel pump.

or if your not saavy... bite the bullet... buy the pump.

If memory serves me (and it often doesn't)... it's a carter pump....
that was for a long time a fairly common pump design... I do alot of 2.5L up this way... they are the same pump. If your having a problem with your pump... don't forget that there is a filter in the bell housing of the pump itself... they often get clogged and overlooked.

Hold on there, that is totally illegal and dangerous. Even with changing the upper housing. The lower housing of an automotive pump still has a drain hole in it that can leak gas.

note the auto fuel pump. pin hole (little white dot) is just above the left screw hole as were lookin at it on fuel pump body....

that is why i need a whole new 'marine' fuel pump.....

thanks for the input here folks. all these part numbers, geeze..... so is there any difference in parts between all these number? i guess specificaly between the A4 number and the A05 number... both seem to be available. can i assume that folks selling the A4 just have old stock numbers and that they are in fact the same fuel pump?

i think back in 75... when the boat was made... it did not have a line that ran from the pump up to the carb.
Ziggy... if you look at the carb, does it even have a blocked off port that will accept a nipple/line? Looks like a 2gc variant in the picture... and not all of them do.
Obviously updating the fuel pump to a newer style that has a line would be best. but not doing it doesn't necessarily that its not CG compliant... as the boat was made that way. in 75... that setup could have been CG compliant.

When i talked about swapping the upper housings. That carter fuel pump comes 1 of 2 ways. It comes as shown with the bell housing, and they make a shorty without the bellhousing, and no filter. Again going back to my memory... i think the shorty is a few bucks cheaper... you can buy that one and swap the bellhousing. The shorty will fit and work as in "pump fuel", but your better off having the extra filter in the fuel pump.
This whole pinhole thing is over rated. If the diaphram breaks in that pump (and they are wicked beefy... haven't seen one in a long time that did) the fuel just dumps back into the crankcase. Not the best place for it... but better than the bilge i guess. as with any marine engine, it should be SOP that you check the oil every time you go out to make sure your not "making oil".
