Nmea connections eagle intellimap / m tech mt500 dsc radio

Hey all, i am having a mare when trying to connect these 2 hardwear items together. after reading the instructions im baffled. Has anyone connected these two together before?????????? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

NMEA data is almost always RS232 (standard com port) which uses one wire to transmit, one to receive, and one common ground. The "transmit" of one device must connect to the "receive" of the other. The cable shouldn't be more than 50 feet long, and it should be "2 conductor shielded."

GPS transmit = Yellow to radio's brown
GPS receive = Orange to radio's red
Common/ground/shield connected together.

The baud rates of both device ports must then be matched. The GPS manual says to call the factory to obtain the settings and learn how to interface devices.

There are a number of free NEMA test programs that you can use to check your devices by connecting them to a laptop. NEMA is usually 4800 buad, 8 bits , 1 stop. But it can vary.

thanks for the info. I connected the two units up and they dont seem to communicate yet. Am i right in assuming i need to enter my mmsi number into the radio or does this not matter at this stage? baud rate on intellimap is 4800 and i have checked the nmea output box only so i guess it transmits to the radio. Does this sound correct??????

Since I did some looking around, these are both 0183 units aren't they?

Did you check the communication settings on the GPS to make sure they match what the radio is looking for?

hi guys and thanks for your input. i have read the instruction manual for the MT500 - RE NMEA - All it says is the $gprmc/gga sentance is decoded NMEA checksum can be turned off. The plotter states it is 0183 connection. I have connected as instructed by Rick on this forum. ie:

GPS Yellow to DSC brown (Tx)
GPS Orange to DSC Red (Rx)
2 ground / plain bare strand together

the plotter menu offers:
nmea input
nmea gps input
nmea output

which one should i go for????

Whoops just to confirm both the MT500 and the 502 are NMEA 0183 compatable.

After looking at both manuals, you need to connect the yellow wire (TX) from the GPS to the brown wire (RX) on the radio. The units don't support Bi-directional communcations so the second connection is not required. Tie the grounds/shields together and ground them to a good solid ground conection Some units require you connect the TX(-) and RX (-) to ground as well.

Yellow goes to brown. Tie the shields /grounds to the system ground.
