2014 mercury 4 stroke 40hp. I added a switch fish finder and rewired my John boat and replaced the battery. When I hooked everything back up to the battery I noted that the trim worked as I lowered the motor. But when I turned the key to crank the engine, the 15 amp fuse blew. I quickly realized that I crosswired the Battery terminals. After replacing the blown fuse and putting the wires correct on the battery, I turned the key to on (heard the tone) then turned the key to crank only to blow the 15 amp fuse again. I started to question whether or not the wires coming from the outboard were correct and I crossed them intentionally and saw a spark on the starboard side of the engine. After some research on the Internet I determined the diode adapter assembly was to blame. I replaced this part and was able to crank the motor without issue. When I put it in the water, the engine started fine. However after about 5 minutes on plane then about 5 minutes at a very slow speed, the engine died. I was able to restart but only to have it die again. After a a couple attempts I noticed the tone was not happening when turning the key into the on position. I also noticed that while leaning on the key (turning the engine) I may get a quick tone and the engine would start, only to die shortly after. After several attempts, eventually the motor would not start at all and the tone has completely disappeared. I hope I’m wrong but I feel like the intentional cross wire and subsequent spark may have done me in. I thought the spark came from the fuse panel on the starboard half but neither the 5amp or the 2 amp fuse was blown.
