Hi all. I have an 89' ebbtide with an 3.0L Merc. I have a Merc Carb 2 Barrell that I just rebulit. I took her out and it ran great and the idle was right on. After running the boat for awhile I docked it for about half an hour. When I tried to start, it didn't want to fire up. I finally got it going and it idles perfectly and runs great. Could this be a choke issue? I have read about problems with the auto chokes. Any ideas? Thanks!

Well if you rebuilt it you should have set the choke plate too

Yes I did, but I have never messed with a carb engine and chokes. Don't know if that's the issue. I think so but I just wanted to see what other thought.

with the engine cold, most plates are adjusted to close on a 1/8 inch drill bit,
If your is a electric choke, engine off, advance throttle, check choke plate and loosen the 3 side screws and turn it one way or the other to close the plate. tighten screws.turn ign on, watch for the plate to start opening and go full open in about 3 minutes.

Does not sound to me like a choke issue. If your choke was sticking shut, you would experience low rpm's and extremly bad fuel economy.

I am thinking you have a dirty carb inlet needle, allowing fuel to dribble into the venturis when the engine is off. Could also be a too high adjusted carb float level...

I don't think it's the carb inlet needle. I replaced it with a spring loaded one on my carb rebuild. I may have set the float high. I set it at 9/16 up as per my manual. A high float can cause that? I didn't let the motor idle at all before I shut her down... and I know I should have. I will use the start thread from now on. It always starts right up when the engine is cold.
