Hey I have a 1989 25 short shaft merc, its got no compression in the top cylinder. So from what I've been told the heads scrap and not worth repairing if the cylinder walls are scored. I'm on the lookout for a 2 cylinder 40hp merc at the moment to replace this but what do I do with it now, rebuilt it? trade it in? sell the parts? Can I just get a power unit for cheap and then sell it? I don't know what to do?

Thanks
mike

It depends what the reason it for it having no compression. Bring 'er on over and we'll take a look <grin>

See I would have it looked at but whats that going to cost me? Don't you have to open the case to even look at anything? In a way I would rather just part the thing out and put the money towards a 40hp short shaft 2 cylinder merc

Well, I'm not an expert but if it were me I'd take the plug out and peek inside to start with. Next would be a compression test. There's a big difference between zero and low compression.

Easy things to look for through spark plug hole:
Hole in the top of a piston.
Piston does not move when crank turns (broken connecting rod).
Neither piston moves when crank turns (broken crank)
Aluminum debris on the top of piston, or on the plug. Possible detonation damage or busted rings, bearings, etc.

Frome there, if the cause of low compression is not obvious I would pull the side cover plate off the exhaust cooling jacket and have a peek through the exhaust ports. From there you should be able to see the cylinder wall surface, and the condition of the rings, etc.

Only as a last resort, would I open up the crank case.

My comment about bringing it over wasn't meant to imply that I wanted to fix it for cash. I just meant I'd look at it with you, and might be interested in it.

Hey thanks for the reply, Ya already took the plugs out and looked around didn't see anything the piston goes up and down, if I remember correctly it had either very low or nothing I'm not 100% I'll do it again and let you know. I'll try taking off the exhaust and having a look, just have to pull it out from storage. But ya if I find a 40hp 2 cylinder I would sell it for sure. Here is some pics from a few years ago on the glen-l.com site

http://glen-l.com/picboards/picboard2/pic164.html
