Re: No compression on one cylinder 93 Johnson 88 spl

Cool, got it and order in. I also ordered a thermostat kit and water pump kit with housing and water deflectors. Should I order the exhaust gasket as well? It seems to be ok. Do you think I should replace the temp switch? Do I need any sealant for the install of the head gasket? I can clearly see the water deflectors, they look collapsed. The book does not really go over the removal and install of these. Thanks again for all the help.

Most of the new gaskets come with a coating eliminating the need for any sealers.

As for the deflectors - just pull the old ones out and put the new ones in.

Simple as that huh, nice. I put the order in today on iBoats for all the parts you all recommended. I will keep everyone posted on the progress. Any more input is greatly appreciated.

Re: No compression on one cylinder 93 Johnson 88 spl

Alright, got all my parts to do the head job. After replacing the head gasket my compression went from a big fat goose egg to 115! Now all cylinders read from 110-120. I am a happy camper. One question I have is will the compression change once the motor is started, ran and re torqued? It was a little more even I think before the rebuild. I also bought a can of Seafoam, what is the best way to apply the bottle I have? Thanks for the help fixing my motor!

It'll change a little once you get oil back in the cylinders and get the motor warm. Those are good numbers though, and I wouldn't be complaining.

I add a full can of seafoam to 1 gal of my normal fuel mix and run it. There's variations on that theme, but I keep it as simple as possible. I run it on the muffs in 15 minute increments until the fuel is gone or I get tired of the whole process. 15 on 15 off.

Great info, I really appreciate all the help. For my first time doing this I owe it all to the help from iboats. You guys really got it down.

Re: No compression on one cylinder 93 Johnson 88 spl

Well boat ran great this weekend. No over heating, solid idle and trolling. My last question regarding the head gaskets I replaced. I know I read 10 hours of running then re-torque. Can this be combined over a few trips? Anything else I should know about this job is appreciated. Thanks for the time.

I re-torque as soon as I feel the new gasket should have seated from normal running; I would do that now if it were my engine.

That is where I was going with this. I figured it got heated up, I ran it for about an hour. I will re-torque, 22lbs sound good? I know my book stated 20-22lbs. Thanks for the quick response.

I think 18-20 ft lbs is recommended.

You are correct, 18-20lbs. I just did my LU and that is what the main 4 bolts called for. I noticed one of the head covers was leaking around the water jacket. Will replacing those do anything to interfere with the head gaskets? Thanks again for all the help.

There should be no effect on the cylinder head gasket.

The cover screws are torqued to 60-84 inch pounds. Use gasket sealing compound.
