i rebuilt the carb, but still can not get her to fire up.when i first got the motor a few weeks ago, i pulled the plugs and she had fire on both plugs. since then though it has been a no go. i was wondering if hte kill switch might be shorting out. i would sure like to be able to fix and run this one without having to pay 60.00 bucks a hour to take her to the shop, dont know if it would be worth it.

Start by double checking spark. If it truely is good, you should be able to get it to draw a spark over 1/4" long. It's pretty common to be able to make the spark jump the plug gap, but it fails under compression.

If the kill switch was shorting out, you'd loose spark. Try disconnecting the two wires to it and isolating them so you can rule it out. There may be some knife disconnects in them under the motor cover.

Also, are you sure you have the spark plug wires the right way round?

Check out "Outboard wont start" in the Engine FAQs, climbhigh.

That should give you a lot more info on what part of the system isn't doing what it should.

Good luck. :)
