1978 Evinrude 85hp, v-4, mod#85899C. There is current to the starter solenoid but, none to the switch at control box. Also current to red wire at terminal on starboard side of motor but none to the yellow and yellow/gray wires. Installed new switch but didn't help. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Re: No fire to switch

Hi ya' Raybo.....

Uhhhh....we need to nail down the problem. Not really sure what it is.

Current to the starter solenoid.....does this mean the large terminals? There should be on the battery side.

No current to the switch at the control box....Which wire? There should be voltage at the red wire anyhow cause it's at battery voltage.

There would be voltage at the red wire at the terminal strip cause it should be at battery voltage.

The yellow and yellow/gray wires at the rectifier, there shouldn't be any there until the engine is running and this will be AC voltage. These wires are the output of the stator to the rectifier. Measure at the red wire from the rectifier which feeds to the redwire to the solenoid (small wire).

So....what is the original problem?

Re: No fire to switch

Thanks for replying, OBJ, hope things are good up there in the "Buckeye".
Yes, there is current to the large terminals of solenoid on Battery side. Yes, there is current to red wire on terminal.
Will measure from rectifier red to solenoid red tomorrow.
I was trying to start the motor and it would idle briefly and then cut out. Then all of a sudden, the switch quit working at all. There is NO current to any of the switch wires, red included.
I replaced the switch as I have heard they go bad occasionally, still no current. Is there possibly an inline fuse in the harness that has blown? Thanks again for your help.
Raybo
