Re: no fire

you got any dark sticky looking stuff dripped out under flywheel? No spark could be bad stator, bad ignition switch, shorted wire....

(Battery Capacitance Dischage Powerpack Test)
Various OMC Engines - 1968 to 1972)
(J. Reeves)

Purchase a small 12v bulb at your local automotive parts store (the 12v bulb is to look like a flashlight bulb, not a headlight bulb). Solder two wires to that bulb, one to the side of the bulb (ground), and the other to the positive point. You might use a bulb of a somewhat lower voltage to obtain a brighter glow... just a suggestion.

Remove the spark plugs. With the key in the on position, make sure that you have 12v going to the pack at the terminal block (purple wire). Now, connect the ground wire from the bulb to any powerhead ground. Connect the wire from the positive point of that bulb to the powerpack wire that is connected to the coil wire on the terminal board (blue wire).

Crank the engine and observe that bulb closely (CLOSELY!). If that bulb glows even the slightest bit, the powerpack is okay. It may be a very dim glow... just so it glows! If it doesn't glow, the pack has failed.

Keep in mind, that type powerpack (Battery Capacitance Discharge) demands a top notch battery of at least 70 amp hours. Any less will, in time, cause powerpack failure.

Re: no fire

okay, let's backtrack a moment before I sign off for the night.....has it been confirmed no spark on all cylinders? I'm assuming yes since you say FW is pulled off. I would assume ya'll checked the kill switch just in case. Since you say there's no distributor then there should be a power pack mounted between the heads. Black/yellow wire from pack would connect to switch. I had issues with my '77 where it wouldn't fire on all cylinders, but then fire right up when I disconnected the kill switch. Long story short new stator, pack, rectifier on mine now.

Keep the info coming!

Mike

EDIT: Joe Reeves fed you some good info, take advantage of it.

Re: no fire

There is a distributor and it does have points. The distributor is under the flywheel. You have to remove the rotor, which is also under the flywheel to get to the points. Lot of contact points in this ignition system to give you trouble. Best thing is to get hold of a manual and see how the system works.

And remember what Joe Reeves posted.....your battery must be good for this system to work properly.

Re: no fire

You need to get a manual. Go to local library, buy a seloc here at iboats, or get a factory manual at marineengine.com.

I have the same motor and I purchased the manual at marineengine.

I would not start doing anything until you get a book w/pics to show you what the parts look like. There is a distributor and a stator. If they were not there, it would not have run.

You can go here for pics till you get a book
http://epc.brp.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E&brands=ej&lang=E

Original PN 383536

http://rapair.com/support/Default.aspx?tabid=97

Or, search up twincity outboards, isomarine, marine.com....seaway marine. Could find one on these sites....maybe a good used one. Might even check at some of your local boat dealers.
