I would start by pulling the flywheel and checking the points, make sure the coils are not showing any cracks.

If the points are clean and adjusted properly, and the condensers are not shorted, I would think you have a coil problem.

I took the coil loose and the plug wire came right out of it. I do not think this is normal.

The coils wires are just pushed or screwed into the coils. Does the wire look rusted or corroded where it goes into the coil?
You can cut a little off of the wire and reseat it into the coil tower.

every thing under the fly wheel feels like it has oil on. Would spraying some carb cleaner on there hurt anything.
