No forward until I unplug the wires from the solenoid?

Re: Evinrude '72 hydro-electric shift, 50 hp-- shift solenoid question..

thank you for the help, guys! i appreciate the quick response and comprehensive, detailed info. i'll get the gear oil changed out and give er another shot. hopefully it's not stuck parts, but i guess it wouldn't hurt to yank the lower unit and clean it out.

regarding the diode, F_R, i think there is a blocking diode which hangs from the terminal block and is integrated into the shift circuit via purple/green wire from the remote. from what i've heard the diode prevents the engine from 'dropping'/defaulting into forward gear, out of neutral when you key the engine off but it's still winding down. i'm not sure about the yellow plug tho. don't think i have one.
diode or not i'm pretty sure it wouldn't effect shifting in the way mentioned, so i'm not too worried about it.

i've been scraping the web for repair advice and info all these years and had no idea this forum existed. what an excellent resource!
thanks again
If I am getting neutral and reverse, no forward, but when I unplug the wires from the solenoid it kicks into forward,, what’s my issue ? I just re routed the green and blue wires and they still work but do I need to do something with the purple and green to get forward ?

Welcome to iboats

When power is removed from the Solenoids, a Spring inside the Propshaft shifts the Gearcase to forward. The Solenoids are there control the flow of Oil, and it's Pressure is what shifts it out of Forward, into either Neutral or Reverse. It sounds like power is being sent to the Solenoids, when there should be none. Start by checking the Wiring and the Switch in the Remote.
How long have you had this engine, and what Parts have you replaced, already?

I had an issue with my 71 not working right and it was a bad switch in the control. My temp fix was hooking (Jerry rigging) up a 6 pin 3 way toggle switch but that is not safe as it would switch from positions up = neutral, middle = forward and down = reverse and then the neutral safety switch would not know if it is truly in gear or not. I found the below information on here and should be the same. I believe Johnson only made this a few years, but mine seems to be working great now with a replaced switch in the control. I agree with Jimmbo, your getting power from somewhere when you should not. These are made to be in forward with no power so if you are out and loose power, you can still limp home and not be stranded in neutral.

"With NO power to either the blue or the green, you should be in Forward. With power to JUST the green, you should have Neutral. With power to BOTH the green and the blue, you should get reverse"

The OP has an Evinrude, which uses a different Control, with a Push Button Switch for Shift Control
yes but wasn't Evinrude and Johnson the same back then? wiring the same? sure the control was different but didn't the power to the wires described above work the same?

I gave my earlier comment, cause the link you gave showed a Johnson Control, and being that he would be dealing with an Evinrude Control, though electrically the same, they certainly have little Resemblance to each other
