I am replacing the impeller on a Johnson 6HP 1967. I note that after dropping the gearcase group from the lower unit group, there is no gasket between the two assemblies. It seems odd to me for something that is submerged in water, even if it is not high pressure inside. Is this OK? the manual seems to indicate no gasket. Should a slicon sealant at least be used?

Thats right there is no need for a gasket or any other seal.
The inside will fill with water via the exhaust outlet anyway until the exhaust pressure pushes it back out again. The pressurised cooling water goes up the water tube from the top of the pump.
