Ended up having to tow a buddy of mine back to the launch yesterday eve. Managed to negotiate the narrow channel leading to our little one holer ramp and get him up beside the lil 2 boat dock without incident. Then I cirlced around and came up behind him. The wind was blowin purty good and I was being blown away from the dock. Leaned out to attempt to hand him a line and when I reached too far my wet hand slipped off the gunnal and kerplunk! A** over tea kettle into the drink.

Thankfully all my valuables were in my gear bag so nothing besides my ego was damaged. But I did lose my favorite pair of sunglasses. Ah well ...

Re: No good deed goes unpunished

I feel your pain! I towed a guy 4 miles (out of my way) back to the ramp. Got him close enough to the dock so he could throw his line over to a guy on the dock. Guy pushes off of my boat, pushing me back about 6-10'. When I put it in gear to move out, *THUNK*...Johnson 150 vs. underwater rock, damaging 2 blades and breaking a chunk off of the skeg.

Do a favor...get screwed.

What are you going to do? I will prob tow the next person who needs it, too...

Can definately relate. We were headed in trying to beat a storm when we came across a brand new Sea Ray broken down. Small cuddy with a nice windscreen attatched to a nice enclosure. Well we towed them about 35 minutes and we didnt beat the storm. We did not even have a bimini top. We were soaked but the people we towed in were perfectly dry. They did offer to buy us a tank of gas though. We naturaly declined. Told him to pay it forward. We might be the ones broken down next time.

Re: No good deed goes unpunished

I offered to go out with my buddy on his maiden voyage in a new-to-him boat. It failed about 3 miles out, so we tied him off and towed him back slowly. Wind picked up, and I ended up sending my wife along to safer and deeper water with my boat (after a pier-fisherman threw a steel leader at me sucking it up around my prop shaft!), and I got in the water barefoot to help my buddy get his dead boat on his trailer against steadily rising winds and waves.

I ended up with a huge gash in my heel, which still hasn't healed since March, and he got his boat on the trailer after 30 minutes of fighting the wind and waves. THEN he blew a tire getting it out of the water, and finally, I got my boat on the trailer and had to pull the prop to remove jackass' leader.

No damage to my boat, luckily. But my heel still has a peeling gash, and my buddy just recently got his boat running again.

Bummer day.

Then lake dried up from drought and haven't been out but one time since. Ramps are now closed due to low water.

THAT was my boating season, in a nutshell.

Here is what my lake looks like now...

once came upon a couple of kids in a fishing boat with motor full of water. I asked them where they wanted to be towed and they said the marina. towing about an hour to get there. I towed them there then they asked if I could tow them about 2 hrs away to the ramp where their truck was! Not

Scooper,
I'm sorry to see your lake so low. We happend to get about 200% snowpack this year and the lakes I go to are still 97-100% full. Come to Wyoming enjoy some cooler weather (70-80 degrees) and water in our lakes.

Lake Havasu in Arizona is really full because of the snowpack. As I understand they are starting to fill Lake Mead. We are having really high temps now. 121 today at about 4 pm

Our snow pack and a cool wet spring had our lake about 3 feet over full with the dam wide open, it took a little over a month of more water coming in than able to go out. At the height there was 125,000 CFS going through the dam and it took over a week for the lake to start to go down

On the 2nd trip out in Frisco Boater's Glastron rebuild I came across a Bayliner with a 85hp Force that was launched from the ramp -never started, and was heading across the lake with the wind. It was only 3/4 mile out . I started towing the young couple for about 100 yds then- "clunk" my motor died-Started checking everything and after a few minutes realized my 20ft bow line was wrapped around the prop-put it in reverse and voila!--we were running again.

A little more complicated than that since there is an infrastructure that delivers water to various localities. You can't just reroute an aqueduct at will.

California gets most of its water from the Colorado river along with a bunch of other states. Each state has their own allocation.

I just now noticed this thread which caught my eye because of your subject line: "No Good Deed" is the name of my boat! And the inspiration comes from that Most True of Truisms: "No good deed goes unpunished". Trust me, my boat has made me pay!

Ha ha! Great name Jay! My attorneys will be contacting you shortly re copyrights ...

Boats are kinda like drinking. If ya wanna play ya gotta pay.

I agree it don't pay to be a good samaritan anymore. Heaven forbid you get in the way of the "authorities". You'll be charged with obstruction of justice. (That's their job.)

I have to politely disagree. Karma is more of a player than we may think. I would never intentionally get in the way of the authorities (and will willingly leave if instructed), but we are protected under the Good Samaritan Act, which basically states that the average, untrained person is doing what they thought was correct, and in the best interest of all parties involved. "Do a favor, get screwed" always seems to rear it's ugly head, though...doesn't it?

Re: No good deed goes unpunished

earlier this spring my motor locked up i had to be towed back to the dock on a windy day, think you fishermen! however it was 2 foot of waves shoving me intoa dock and my tower left me about 20 feet out. i have a 23 foot cuddy next thing i know my outdrive is towards shore on the ramp................... luckly i had my dad to help me fight the current and shove it around the dock to the other side. I HATE MOTOR PROBLEMS!

Well, I have to disagree with you sir. Not every state has a Good Samaritan Act, more over, not all Good Samaritan Acts cover the same. In NC it only covers medical aid. So if you stop to help that little old lady to change her tire and you damage anything you are not cover! If you tow a boat and the owner of the boat perceive some damage done by you, then you are NOT covered. Everyone needs to check his local laws to see if you have such Act and what is covered under it....
