No green oil light on my Honda 9.9

Gents,<br /><br />Sure glad I found this forum, as I have lot's of Honda questions! <br /><br />Anyhow, I went down and started my Honda 9.9 4 stroke kicker (1999 year, I believe) and it ran okay, but I noticed the green oil pressure light wasn't illuminated.<br /><br />I shut it down, although it sounded fine and I have my doubts that there was no oil pressure. The oil level was fine on the dipstick.<br /><br />I'm guessing I need to pull out the light bulb and check that. Perhaps run a multi-meter to the wires at the bulb and check for voltage when the engine is running? Anyone care to guess how much voltage I should expect? Any other hints would be appreciated!<br /><br />Thanks

CAREFUL! The oil level being OK does not ensure adequate lubrication. While the oil pump is pretty reliable, you could still have a blocked oil pickup screen, or a faulty oil pump check valve, either of which could result in low pressure and insufficient lubrication.<br /><br />Yes, you should check the light bulb, and you can do that by verifying good continuity through the filament with a multimeter or by connecting a common 9V battery to only the light itself (don't short circuit anything) to see if it glows. If you find a bad bulb, you may be home free.<br /><br />As far as checking for voltage at the bulb while running the engine, on a BF9.9 the engine normally supplies power to the bulb via the CDI unit and the brightness of the bulb increases as rpm is raised, so the voltage will vary accordingly. The bulb should glow as soon as the engine is started although it may be dimmer than at high rpm. But again, CAUTION IS ADVISED here since bad things will happen if you in fact don't have lubrication and are running the engine.<br /><br />If the bulb is good, check out the pressure switch before running the engine. Your engine, your decision whether to run it or not. Good luck.

hello <br /> I am no Honda expert. Hondon is that one. a quick easy check that I use on the tinymite 4 strokes is to hook up the old multi meter between a known good oil pressure switch and ground. the switch is usually normally closed at rest and open with pressure so you should have continuity at engine off and open at engine on. good luck and keep posting.<br /> most of those lights are LED's and can be tested with a Diode function check.

I have owned a Honda 15 and a Honda 25, and the green light was not that bright oneither of them. In fact, I could not see them if it was a fairly bright day, unless I cupped my hands over them, to shade them a little.<br /><br />Are you sure it is not working??<br /><br />Just thought I would ask.......

Brian<br />I had the same thing happen to me on my 8hp. I took it to my dealer and he said don't worry about it. It's just the sender in the light. He said they could fix it for about 40 bucks. Again, he said don't worry about it, this is a fault with small honda outboards. <br />I put the kicker on the bayliner and trolled for about 100 feet. it stoped. SIEZED. <br />The dealer ended up paying for all repairs only after I threanted to sue him.. Let the dealer tell you it is working ok and keep all paper work! Good luck

Gents,<br /><br />Finally resolved this problem. Turns out that the light bulb was burned out. I verified that with a multimeter. Honda doesn't sell just the bulb though, you have to buy the housing and short section of wiring too. Cost about $26.00.<br /><br />Strangly enough the new light didn't respond to the 9volt battery check. But, it lights up nice and bright when the engines running.<br /><br />I'm much relieved that the oil pressure was fine, as I suspected. Thanks for all your help!

Great news that the kicker's oil pressure light issue had the simple, relatively inexpensive resolution . Hope the main engine smoking issue likewise has a simple, easy resolution.
