no interrupt

85 merc alpha 1 engine s/n a346486 drive s/n a353905. the shift interrupt switch will not interrupt. lower shift cable seems smooth and is in proper adjustment but switch lever will not move when shifting. lever does move manually. what am i missing?

check the switch continuity disconnected. it should be close at rest and open when pressed. the cam kinds bumps the switch a little its not like a light switch on or off. if its shifts without too much efort chances are evberything is ok

IS the boat in the water? If not and you are running it on muffs, then it's normal.
It should only work when there is a load on the prop (from being in the water and in gear). This puts a load on the shift cable and moves the Y bracket to close the switch. When the switch is closed, the ignition is shorted to ground. and it only happens coming OUT of gear, NOT going into gear.
