<br />This is one of two B-52's passing the USS Ranger at about 30 feet, they did this fly by twice at 350 knots. The second Buff is on the other side of the ship -- they split the ship like that -- twice, can you just imagine that? And yes, it does look as if he is about to become a reef, but the 52 flys like that. They look funny taking off with the nose pointed to the ground.<br />

gonna have to do a leeeetle math on this one. It is the camera angle that makes it look as though the plane is headed for the drink, right? What is the length of the ranger and the length of a 52?

The fly like that Techno, don't know about the Ranger, but the B52 is about 160 feet nose to tail. C&P:<br /><br />B52 flies unlike other aircraft. It takes off nose-low or level, a consequence of the tandem arrangement of its landing gear. This looks strange to most people, who are used to seeing aircraft take off nose-high. Since this requires a high wing incidence angle, the B-52 flies nose-down in cruise. <br />Take how you will, I still think it's a neat pic.

never seen the B-52 flyby but I was on a destroyer going over 40 knots when we got passed by an aircraft carrier <br /> talk about a bow wave.

me nope, I was on the o3 level fwd having a cup of coffee and on the fantail having a smoke while watching it, it was amazing that much steel can go that fast. I have been on the deck when an F-14 buzzed us at supersonic speed, sounds like paper tearing and by the time you hear it its past.<br />while we are out boatriding we occasionally call for flyby's or ship runs to test weapons and tracking gear, its the only way we can stay combat ready.<br /> shooting at towed targets is fun. pilots get nervous but its fun. pilots dont trust CIWS.<br />CIWS has no IFF detect if its on and the target meets paremeters it shoots,we hope.<br /> <br />the official name for it is Close In Weapons System, we unofficially say its for Captain It Wont Shoot .<br /> its been upgraded several times since I retired and now has infared as well as radar for tracking.<br /> I do read what I can about it on the Janes Fighting Ships site.<br />Janes also has a lot of info on other Navies as well.
