While I am waiting on my manual for 1984 25hp Evinrude (1)what is proper procedure for filling lower unit to keep all the oil from running out the lower fill port while you put the screw back in? Do you go back an top off in the upper fill port, and (2) the throttle grip is labeled FAST, START, SHIFT, and SLOW in that order. What in the world does that mean?

Put your finger in the upper fill vent. This will create a vacuum and prevent gear oil from running out while you screw in the lower plug. Clean the plugs and put new seals before you fill the unit.

From highest to lowest rmp:

"Fast" means full throttle, high speed operation in gear.

"Start" is throttle setting to start the engine. There is a high speed interlock to prevent the engine from turning if you attempt to pull start at Fast.

"Shift" is lower engine speed to allow you to shift F-N-R safely without damaging the lower unit. There is an interlock to prevent shifting if idle speed is too high

"Slow" is lowest or idle speed

After you take out the 2 plugs to drain the lower unit, make sure you clean the plugs and seals as good as you can. After filling your lower unit with oil you can hold the oil bottle in the lower hole while you (or a helper) replace the upper plug. When tightened it creates a partial vacuum like Bailey said. Then pull the oil bottle out of the lower hole and put the lower plug in as quickly as you can. Some oil will leak out but it should be very little. Having the plug CLEAN and HANDY nearby makes the job pretty simple. If you're good at it you will have the lower plug in before even an ounce of oil leaks out. If you have trouble with the plug just stick the oil bottle back in, remove the top plug and refill and try again. Remember....clean hands and clean plugs make the job much easier. Also the FAST, START, SHIFT, SLOW label is on the part of the tiller arm which doesn't turn and there should be some kind of pointer on the grip part that turns.

Thanks, guys! Walking and chewing gum has always been a problem, but keeping the lube nozzle in while put in the upper screw sure helped. The slow, shift, etc on the tiller throttle means what I assumed it does but the order sure is counter intuitive.

Will a proper sized o-ring work as the seal for the vent screws?
