I have read through other posts about finding year of motors the plate that holds that info is gone. the freeze plug has # but looks like it is just a sierial #. when I google pictures of similar year johnsons it is impossible to narrow it down. I was hoping some one that knows more that me can tell what year this 18 hp johnson is.

I have one looks just like that, want to say it's maybe a 15HP...? Great little motor.

Yep, it's a 1961 18hp, and by the looks of it, a long shaft.... I agree - if it has good compression and is in basically good shape, then it's a good little motor. Good parts availability, reliable with basic maintenance and good power for the weight...
