Well, whats one more week after waiting two months.
When do you think they will actually come up with the part?
Whats the longest time you've heard of for a factory part backorder?

Do you have the OLD stat?

Get the dimensions, CALL STANT and see what they have closest to it.

If you find one that the temp section is good enough then just cut down the outer.

OR

Someone has to pay freight on the part, you are just playing the waiting game for the nearest dealer to get the part and nagging that it isn't immediately available, the freight isn't THAT bad, call the Merc Stocking Dealer where ever that is, order it, and be done already.

Re: No more Mercury Outboards for me...

On Mercury we had some parts on back-order for 11 months back in 02...The oldest Mercury one as of today is from April 9th. I wouldn't infer much from that though. Every manufacturer has forecast issues on parts as they are building/vending many parts only once or twice a year. I would run by a Yamaha dealer with your thermostat and see if they have one. Keep in mind that the relationship between Yamaha and Mercury is less than "big buddies" now and that may be contributing to the problem.

Just for giggles, our best fill rate on parts was:

Suzuki
Yamaha
Honda and Tohatsu about the same
Mercury

That was us...Someone else's experience would probably be different

5outa6,,,,,,,, I live in Azle Texas which is North West of Fort Worth, Texas. If you will call Mark Gunter at Gunter Marine at 1-817-625-5693, chances are he has the in stock. I buy all my parts from him and nearly always has what I need. Been in business since dirt was invented. Might give it a try, I know he ships a lot of parts from his place.

I can now join this club, I'm backordered on parts now too. Looks like more folks are fixing than buying.

Re: No more Mercury Outboards for me...

The thermostat arrived yesterday. Almost two months after ordering and paying for it. Un acceptable in my book.

As to the tag line for this thread: No more Mercury Outboards for me....

it is still my opinion. I've had a Honda on a larger boat which I never had to buy a part other than maintenance items in over 5 years.

Seems around these parts most are opting for Yamaha's.....

Hopefully I'll never have to buy another outboard.

Thanks for everyones help and suggestions.

Re: No more Mercury Outboards for me...

Still had water in the oil after changing the thermostat.
Took it in the the dealer. They didnt think it was the head gasket and changed the gaskets between the power head and the lower unit.
Took the boat out and after 1/2 an hour at 50% power the alarm went off again and engine dropped to idle.
Limped back 10 miles at idle (and was happy to get in).
Took boat back to dealer. Now I think Im getting the parking lot treatment as they haven't looked at it after about 2 weeks.
Water is pissing out of the upper hole pretty good.
I dont think the impeller has been changed in a few years.

I bought the owners manual and now if they haven't looked at it in a few days, I may take the boat back and drop the lower end and change the impeller.

Any thoughts?

Impeller replacement is easy with the service manual. It's a 2 or 3 beer type task.

"Still had water in the oil after changing the thermostat"

Why would you expect anything different?
