So this may sound stupid however my first chrysler motor ive owned ..There is no place for muffs i beleive the water inlet hole is in the front triangle shaped pretty big hole,I think this is the hole that sucks water up correct ?? ??? Is this, kinda on top of propellar under cavitation plate, so and can I just stick the hose in there rather than filling up a big old garbage can to use a a test tank ???

Attached is where muffs would fit over the screened intakes. The Muffs are not as good in getting cooling water IMO. I use a 55 Gal Barrel with a drain plug that a water hose will fit onto to empty (onto the yard away from working area). This has been a once a year start-up event that has worked well.

Some older ones don't have the holes like Wick showed.
Your right about the pickup.
Put it deep in a bucket.
Needs to be 2-4 inches OVER the top of the water pump.
See the oil fill screw in the pic. The pumps above that.So put it in DEEP!!!!

1. I?ll be interested in seeing your Pics to add to my collection of Chrysler?s 35-55 hp pics and info.
2. My 1970 Chrysler is a 35 hp with a 55 hp cover/hood. I Have Loved It Since 1984!!!!
3. It does not have an alternator but electric starts instantly with starter or rope.
4. More pics of my 35 hp that has been all I need. It can smell a fish a mile away.
5. I ?had? (LOL) automotive and small engine training and experience 1960s-90s that helped when needed.

As jerryjerry says, older 35-55Hp Chrysler did not have any holes for pickup.
You have to put in a deep bucket. Waterline above the waterpumphousing (about 4-5 inch above the caviatorplate).

Re: No muff holes on chrysler 1970 55hp

There is no end to the learning about the old Chryslers 35-55 hps. Now I wonder if the PO of my 1970 35hp had a later lower unit installed to have the screened cooling water pickups (since no white paint was on that section). That was the best purchase, I feel PO wanted the motor and boat treated as his family had from new. He gave me a course on do and don?ts (which I needed as a 1st owner above a 5 hp John Boat owner) on about a half hr - hr ride on the water. Running it bone dry, (1984-85) before leaving the lake every trip was wasting too much gas if I was going out the next week. That was about all I adjuster from the PO?s care.

Re: No muff holes on chrysler 1970 55hp

First off it's NOT an idle screw.
It's a fuel/air mix screw.
Turn it in till it just bottoms out GENTLY!!!
Then out 1 turn for inital adjustment.
Then set idle at about 800 in gear.
Then slowly: 1/8th of a turn in.Wait 10 seconds and then another 1/8th. Do this until it bucks or kicks then out 1/2 turn.
Gott wait 10 seconds for the motor to use the gas at the old setting.
The idle is adjusted with the towershaft. It has a screw with a locking nut that rides up against the block.
This site sells parts. If they don't have what you need??
Try Valley Sales in Prudenville,Mi. Or Franz marine.
Boats . net is a JOKE worst place to buy parts on the net. That used to be the only place I bought, then they got too big and customer service went to He%^

Re: No muff holes on chrysler 1970 55hp

I used the advanced search at the top and entered wickware (as user name) water pump (as the key word) and found my water pump replacement info + more on my 1970 35hp Chrysler at the address below. I ordered my impeller from here at the best price due to price matching and US Postal lowest shipping rate.
