Before running them in, put a little anti-seize compound or some grease on them.
It makes life a lot easier five years from now.
You never put grease on lug nuts or lug bolts or you will over torque them. Torque ratings are for dry nuts/bolts.

While I readily admit to being Anal...
I have never put a torque wrench to a lug nut or a spark plug.
Spark plugs get one good pull of a 3/8th ratchet.
Lug nut gets two good "Grunts" from a 4-Way lug wrench.

When a shop puts on my tires, I insist that they final torque them by hand.
If they run them on with the impact wrench, I about bust a gut trying to get them back off.

Which reminds me; I have a new trailer and I need to go out and lube the lug nuts while they are still new. :D

NEVER put any grease, oil or anti-seize on lug nuts or lug bolts.

Years back when I was a teenager, we were traveling to Northern Wisconsin when we felt a shimmy, pulled over to find a missing wheel - thank God for a tandem trailer. The wheels had lug bolts and I was the one that tightened them after my dad and I repacked the bearings. I'm thinking that I didn't seat the wheel correctly and tightened them up on the lip of the hole and not centered in it. Didn't have any problem with the others loosening up, just that one. Also, I know you're "supposed" to check the torque on the nuts or bolts but I never do, I torque them to 100 ft lbs with a torque wrench and go. I do the same with my cars and have never had a problem. Not saying you should do the same however. See if you can tighten the bolts on the lip of the holes in the rim, if you can then I would bet that was your problem.

Just replaced the shocks on my Chevy Silverado. Torque spec for the lug nuts on that vehicle are 140 ft/lbs. My Lexus GS300 gets 80 ft/lbs. Don't see how you could possibly torque them each properly without a torque wrench. I know on my Lexus that if you overtorque the lug nuts the disc will slightly warp.

The specs are written for dry nut/bolts. If you actually have to have them lubed, you need to know that you have to reduce the anount of torque, often 25% to 50%, so as to not damage the fastner.

At least for things that are important to do correctly, you don't seem very anal.

This is from the factory Ford 2011 Mustang manual"

NOTICE: Make sure to apply a thin coat of anti-seize lubrication only to the interface between the wheel pilot bore and the hub pilot. DO NOT allow the anti-seize to make contact with the wheel-to-brake disc/drum mounting surface, wheel studs, wheel nuts, brake pads or brake disc friction surfaces or damage to components may occur.

I just have to ask, are your rims Dayton or Bud?
As in do you have clips on the bolts that hold the rim to the brake drum?

No clips on the bolts and no brakes on the trailer.... although im not thinking this question was towards me ;) I did get the lugs replaced and the haul to the lake this weekend ended with both wheels remaining on the trailer! Every stop made wheels were checked this go round!

If it makes any difference the proper term is hub mount (studs being refferd to in this post) and stud mount (pessed in studs) it is most gernerally determined by the hole diameter in the rim and it's countersink usually 30 degre (hub mount) and stud mount is generally conical seat it was determined over many years of trial and error by the class D OEM truck manufacturer that the hub mount were more versitile and stronger especially in thier light wieght wheel line which is being used more and more along with thier super single wheel applications. If you curious how I know this in my opinion (useless information) I lived it for the better part of 20 yrs, manufacturing class D aluminum truck wheels for about every known truck and trailer manufacturer in the United States. And just now had a use for this information I thought would never be able to share with anyone.

here's a little tip :)
i picked up a couple 2" bolts ,with the same thread as the lug bolts , cut the heads off , put a slice across it , like a screw, when changing a tire run the home made screws in finger tite, then you have a stud sticking out to hold the tire ,while you put the lug bolts in and then take out your screws to get the other 2 lug bolts in :) no more futzin trying get the holes lined up for the lug bolts.

sorry for such a long winded post

Wow!!! You now have two ways for the wheel to come off, hit a passing vehicle and possibly hurt someone. For heavens stake, it doesn't make any difference if you have lug bolts, or lug nuts. If they aren't tight bad things happen. You now have a nut that can come loose as well as a stud that can come loose. And I'm betting the harness of the bolts you used are not the same as the lug nuts either.

You need to re-read his post, especially the part of the sentence just before the second smiley face.

thank you , fibersport, you understand what i ment
silvertip, the bolts are used O N L Y AS A GUIDE PIN and then removed to mount the other two lug bolts

Yep, and it makes sense. It's pretty tough to hold up the wheel, center it on a hole and then use another hand to start the lug bolts, but then that's why God make teenage sons! ;)
