Re: No oil problem

Did it run out of oil?
Did you purge the oil line?

Re: No oil problem

I believe it did (filled kind of in a panic out in the water); low oil indicator never came on.

Not sure how to "purge" (bit of a newbie to power boats)

Thanks

Re: No oil problem

Hey Cat, didn't you see the e-TEC hype, where they cut the oil line and then drove the boat home w/o oil.

I saw it on an e-TEC infommericial, so it must be true, right?

Sorry, I cannot help you on that motor....but I felt like a dig on BRP was warrented.

Re: No oil problem

You're unsure if the tank was empty? How much oil was in it when you filled it? It only takes 1/2 inch or so to keep the pickup filter covered, so it should be obvious whether it was empty or not.

If it sounded and continues to sound because it was empty and you filled it without priming, it's probably an easy fix (prime, re-set, whatever). The lack of "low oil" warning gives pause though.

If the no oil alarm sounded (and continues) without the tank ever being empty, that's a different set of possibilities. (could explain the no "low oil" warning).

Assuming the first scenario - Is there a priming procedure described in the owner's manual? If you don't have one, you might try to get one - I've found them invaluable when I buy used engines because they usually cover easy and common owner-maintenance stuff like this.

I'm not familiar with Etech procedure, but on the older oil-mixing systems (vro/oms), it's dead easy and just involves disconnecting the oil line at the connection at the engine, pumping the priming bulb until all air is expelled and several ounces of oil flow freely, then reconnecting it. But like I said, I have no direct knowledge of Etech.

I'd also try to figure out why the "low oil" alarm didn't sound if in fact the tank was empty or very low - probably a problem either at the wiring connection from the oil tank, or the float switch inside the oil tank. Should be easy to figure out which.

Re: No oil problem

going to look into all when on the boat tomorrow (with manual in hand!). on another note, since were at marina and needed oil immediately put in the regular 2stroke which they had. realize this engine calls for XD100 type. could that be a problem??

Re: No oil problem

You should have carried some XD100 with you and never allowed the oil to get that low. You will damage your motor running ANYTHING but XD100, if that's what it's programmed for.

You need to remove all oil from the reservoir.

Fill with XD100.

Follow the shop manual exactly to purge all air from the oil system.

XD100 is a special oil that allows much higher gas to oil ratios (my E-Tecs run 87:1).

You may need a BRP tech to reset the oil error code using the BRP sw and a laptop to be able to run at normal RPM. I don't think just purging the air will cut it.

All good reasons to never allow oil to get low. BTW, don't ever run your fuel tank dry ... you will get similar issues from that and maybe damage a very expensive fuel pump.
