1985 90 hp Johnson

Rebuilt carbs 2 weeks ago with help from this forum and as predicted ran like a champ. Had boat out several times and ran flawless.

Started boat last night and quite stupidly throttle was up full when motor started. I immediately pulled back throttle. When I went to throttle up in gear the boat will not get on plane. Pushing primer or squeezing primer ball had no effect. What could I have done or is this just a coincidence that maybe a coil or power pack (or worse) failed.

Will perform Spark check and compression test tonight but was wondering about worse case scenarios

Re: No Power AGAIN

How fast do you suppose the engine revved when this happened? It's possible that there could be damage if it seriously over-revved.

That said, and you find no serious damage, there's something wrong if you can start the engine in neutral with the throttle wide open. I'd get that taken care of right away, before you use the motor again.

Re: No Power AGAIN

Is compression checked with all plugs out or just the cylinder you are working on?

ALL plugs out. Ignition disabled (kill switch disconnected).

Sorry to be a pain....no kill switch, how to disable ignition?

Re: No Power AGAIN

Leave the key in the off position and jump the sloenoid from the battery cable to the yellow wire on the small post of the solenoid.

Re: No Power AGAIN

I performed compression test:
all 4 cylider were within 100-105 PSI

I assuming this is okay and apparently gets me off the hook as far as mechanical damage?

My spark test was only using a inline spark tester that doesn't measure spark intensity. I do have spark in all 4 cylinders. I know I need a more thorough spark test however I need to acquire a spark gap tester ( or make one).

For now I would like to know if mechanical damage can be ruled out?

Re: No Power AGAIN

I have not done a thorough spark test yet (RAIN!), only confirmed the prresence of spark. However assuming spark checks okay am I narrowed down to fuel? If so and given the above test using primer bulb and electric choke/primer yields no increase in RPM, a fuel blockage is before the fuel pump i.e., inline filter, canister filter, connections etc.? Is this a reasonable assumption? Any suggestions?

Re: No Power AGAIN

If your spark is OK you can confirm that it is a fuel problem by taking a spray bottle of pre mix and squirting it directly into the throat of the carbs as you try to start it.

Any fuel on the plugs?

You may also have to check timing as the spark needs to fire at the right time for the fuel mix to ignite.

Re: No Power AGAIN

I actually walked away from this for awhile trying to get my other boat running.
I still have no power when I try to plane

-I have 100- 105 compression
-I have spark jumping a 5/8 inch gap
-I checked flywheel..pulled flywheel and woodruf key is still there
-pushing primer switch or squeezing primer bulb has NO effect while trying to plane.

Where do I go from here?
Do I change the inline fuel and the fuel/water separator and filter?

Need help...this boat was supposed to be my ride while I got my bigger boat ready.

Changed fuel/water sep no change

changed both power packs (because I had spares and I am getting frustrated) no change

I am at a total loss here...any help?

Re: No Power AGAIN

Are you checking your spark when you are trying to plane or just sitting idling. Something my be breaking down under a load. Also are you sure you don't have some old fishing line or rope wrapped inside your prop? Is the engine missing or sputtering or running bad in any way or just no power? It just sounds like you are dropping a cylinder. I don't know if your engine has a SLOW mode on it or not.

Re: No Power AGAIN

The spark was checked with a home made spark gap tester that I made from instructions from another thread. Test was conducted with all plugs leads attached to device. I don't believe this motor has a slow mode. If I am dropping a cylinder it's not showing at cranking. It would have to be dropping when I go to throttle it up.

What about a bad trigger or timing base?

Re: No Power AGAIN

You might need a buddy to pull the wires one at a time and listen for a change in rpms when it bogs at wot. Make sure that he has some good insulated pliers when he does this. At least this will confirm good spark and you can eliminate this as a problem.

Re: No Power AGAIN

I actually gave up on this and gave it to the mechanic.

He tells me the lower carb needs cleaning! I rebuilt both carbs in May!!!!

The fact that I am not getting any change in RPM when I press the solenoid/primer switch indicate that it's not the carb? If it's a fuel problem would it not be before the carb?

Re: No Power AGAIN

Did you check your flywheel key like fireman57 suggested? You'll have to pull the flywheel to do that. If it is sheared, it will throw off your engine's timing. If you have a timing light, that may be easier to check first if you don't have immediate access to a flywheel or harmonic balancer puller. If you do pull it to check the key, make sure you torque the flywheel nut back down to proper specification or else you WILL (trust me, I know this from fresh experience! ;) ) end up shearing it.

Re: No Power AGAIN

As I mentioned above I pulled the flywheel and it had no sign that it was sheared or out of place. And yes it took some doing (air impact wrench) to get it off and a harmonic balancer puller. OUCH!!!

Does anyone buy into what the mechanic I took it to says ....that it is the carbs? Would a dirty or clogged carb also stop improvement when I engage the primer/solenoid (choke) switch?
