Here's a short summary of the events leading up to my problem............

16' crestliner (mid 70's) with 70 hp chrysler was tied to the dock when a storm came through, broke away from the dock and sank on the right side submersing the engine. Did not completely tear down motor cause we got it running very soon after taken out of water. Cleaned carbs, iginition system, new fuel tank, greased and lubed everything, changed LU oil.

Got it running good, launched it yesterday, fired right up. got past the no wake area, started to get in the throttle easy ( just to make sure everything was ok) and the boat started moving pretty good. When I got to a certian point in the throttle, the motor reved up but would not pull. Let back on the throttle, and it started moving slowly again. Got back in the throttle and it did the same thing. Seems like it is slipping out of gear, but no grinding noises and no shavings in the LU oil. Drained the LU oil when I got home and completely tore down the LU. Main shaft was ok (splines) and forward and reverse gears were fine. Shift mechanism was fine. Only thing I cant see is where the main shaft goes into the motor (looks good looking up at it)

I can turn the motor over using the prop with it in gear and it doesn't slip.

I am new to boating and I am stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.
