No power to engine after spark at key switch

I accidentally arched the positive and negative leads from the ignition switch. Now I have no power to the engine. Power tilt trim doesn't work and no reaction when the key is turned. It is a 88 Evinrude 150. What has happened?

how long did you have it shorted for?

if it was for only a second or two, then you probably blew a fuse.. have you checked them?

(I just discovered that someone had wrapped my fuse in cigerate foil.. don't do that... :)

if it shorted and wires started melting, then you have some work ahead of you..

where exactly (what wires) did you short ???? (and how )

regards

Frank

It just arched for a second. One spark. But I replaced the fuses and still nothing. What else could it be? The strator? Or could it be the key switch or something? starter solinoid?

Oh yeah... the wires. they were the positive and negative leads for the ignition switch. And I was trying to connect the tach to the negative lead. Which is what the instructions seemed to be telling me. then the spark and then nothing.

Which fuses did you find? Where they burnt? Did you find one one the motor close to the TiltnTrim relay box?

Yes, I replaced the two fuses in the box in the back of the motor. The power for the tilt trim comes from these. I have no power at the ignition switch. Could it be the starter solinoid. There isn't a click there as metioned in other posts. The fuses didn't look burnt, but it is difficult to tell because they are black boxes.

Re: No power to engine after spark at key switch

ok, so you shorted out the positive and negative behind the key...

Do you have a multimeter? (or even a test light?)

you should start checking backwards to see where the power stops...

I don't know your motor specifically, so I can't advice anything specific.. but I see two possibilities, either your powerpack/s control the power .. and its fried.. (I don't know, but I doubt it.)

or you have a burnt wire somewhere.. Follow all the wiring (continuity tester is good for that.) from the controller back to the powerhead and verify thats all good. (ignition is purple I think)
And while you are at it, (maybe very important, check your earth/s on the motor, since thats where the earth in the controller comes from.

Schematic can probably give you alot more specific instructions if he is on later.. but I'd start just general checking for starters, and take it from there.

Sorry I can't be more specific for you, but all the outboards I am familiar with are much older then yours.. so very likely completely different.

regards

frank

PS, Good luck. :)

I don't think that your starter soleniod is the problem.. but if you want to test, hook a test light to earth at one end, and the small wire on the soleniod to the other.. and then try and start it, if the light comes on , but no starter, thats bad. (soleniod not switching)

if the light doesn't come on, (the answer I am expecting.) then the soleniod is probably find and you should start looking for reasons the power is not reaching the soleniod.

regards

Frank

PS, listen to Schematic, he has helped me many times...

Replace the 20 amp fuse in engine harness, it is in a red connector that looks like small red primer bulb.
