i have a '76 55hp chrysler and she'll fire up no trouble, idle in and out of warm up but when i put in gear it'll stall out. i have to very quickly go from warm up to forward and then sometimes she'll go like hell.....for about 20 yards. then it seems like she floods right out, no power doesn't matter if i'm wot or half or whatever the rpm's kind of stay the same. after stalling out it's rreally hard to start.i have replaced the fuel pump dia whatever. someone suggested it's too rich, but the screw is turned 3/4 to 1 turn and i'm skeered that i'll lean it out too much. carb is spotless also. maybe i have fuel too rich at 40:1 any help would be great. thanks in advance guys!

Re: no power

You should do a compression test and a spark test. Pull the spark plugs and look at the tips. Are both dirty or is one clean. The clean one could be your problem. A compression test will show if you have a bad cylinder or a blown head gasket.

Re: no power

bottom plug was black (the coil packed in last year) top plug not black but not the nice tan color either. not burning too lean or washed like bad headgasket. thanks for the reply. now what fuel/oil ratio should i have? everybody seems to be telling me everything BUT that when i ask. thanks.

Re: no power

50 to 1 is the correct mix. Make sure it is a TCW3 marine grade. Do not use the same oil you use for your chainsaw or leaf blower. I would not go leaner then where you have it. The cylinder that has the cleaner plug sounds like your problem. Could be week spark or bad compression in that unit. Spark test is easy. Compression testers run around 40 bucks.

Re: no power

just because the outside of the carb is clean is no indication of what the inside is. has the motor been sitting for any period of time prior to you trying to start it? have you check the fuel filters? how old is the fuel in the tank. why did you change the fuel pump, was it bad or were you just changing parts?

Autozone has Compression testers on there loan a tool list. $25 deposit & you get it back when you return the tool.

BTW: I use cash so I can get my money back right away, debit card takes 3 days.

i have had the carb off, the bowl was spotless, i sprayed wicked powerful carb cleaner thru every port i could see, motor sat all winterfuel filters are good and clean, no water in fuel. fuel is fresh i changed the pump because i did not know when the last time it was changed and was cheap and easy to do. thing will start and idle all day long, seems to run on 2 cylinders soon as i put into gear it loses power like drops a cylinder. if spark is good and compression is good, what else could it be? bad reeds? it's a 76 55 hp mod#559bg ser# 3082 at least i was told it's a 76.

Re: no power

do a compression test, and verify you have good spark. you say it loses power like it drops a cylinder when you put it in gear, so put it in gear and pull plug wires and see it is dropping a cylinder. i suspect your problem is a carb adjustment/rebuild. when you sprayed the cleaner in you may have just forced a blockage further into the carb. did you verify there is good fresh fuel (no water in it).
