No recitifier 76 70hp V3

I was at the lake today and was speaking with a guy who just purchased a boat. As were talking he was telling how he could not figure the wireing on the boat and noting was working. While I was inspecting the motor we found the rectifier was missing. The boat was running fine but was just missing the receitifer. After I told him the part was missing he showed me a brand new recitifier that came with the boat. He was told by the owner the part was needed to make the boat run but obviously you can run this motor without a recitifier since I just watched him zooming up and down the lake. So my question is does the recitifier have anything to do with his electical problem and has any alteration been done to allow the motor to run without the recitifier. :.

I'd sure like to see a V3!

The rectifier inputs are separate stator windings, and the outputs are engine ground and battery positive (the wire is attached to the soleinoid post with the battery cable). My interpretation is: no rectifier = no circuit = no current = no problem.

I guess if any of those floating leads were in contact with the wrong thing it could wreak havoc.

That would explain why the battery's not charging. And the tach don't work. What electrical problem exactly was he having?

JT has it right and your assumptions are correct that a rectifier is not required to run the engine. It's only needed to change AC voltage from the stator to DC voltage to charge the battery. That's ac current on the rectifier leads. I would not touch them (or let them touch anything under the cowl) when the engine is running. The term "sparks" will take on new meaning.
