Re: no response to my last 3 post

i rebuild the carbs and put new kits in there but i believe its probably the synchronizing parts that i can not maintain and adjust right.

it does not bog down when in gears, it bogs down when i accelerate it and it idles but doesnt response right?

i read some here that it could be my idle mixture screw adjustment, i maybe running too rich, i didnt know that this motor are so sensitive in turning the idle mixture. i usually turn it all the way in then turn out 1 1/2 then 1/2 turn in. i havent tried just turning bit by bit.

i am suspecting it could be the breaker points too or condenser for they havent been replaced since day one.

you are right about the rectifier, but could it be affecting the spark on the plugs when its at high RPM?

and i was thinking again if my points are bad, how come it starts everytime? and idles smooth and very stable. only when i accelerate to high rpm that it hesitate and when in gear. it doesnt die when i shift to gears.

and if in case the rectifier , i want to know if i can use those black square type so i can order here on iboats.

tnks again

Is all of this on the muffs or in the water and undeway? Makes a difference...

Re: no response to my last 3 post

i remember i had to cut the 2 yellow wires shorter because they were corroded on the rectifier and i accidentally switched the wires, is this maybe a reason why it bogs down or hesitate when i rev it?

can i use the sqaure type rectifier black or have to find a same replacement?

Re: no response to my last 3 post

Back "in the day" I worked on these old motors every day. These older (magneto) Mercs ran VERY well when set up correctly. You say it ran fine three months ago now it doesn't after you had a FP failure. I always start with compression checks and lower unit checks then end with a good crisp blue spark at the plugs. Assuming you've done all the preliminary stuff I ask; While you were changing/rebuilding parts did you change or screw around with the primary/secondary timing syncronization? Check that over... I think your problem is there per your post. Hopefully you did take time to precisely set your floats and then sync'd the three carbs to each other. Fuel guzzling is due to wrong float levels. Having done all that; you can get the motor to run on the hose but when the motor is in the water there is a back pressure on the exhaust that changes how the engine runs at idle. Once you've set the carbs for idle, it's all ignition and carb sync. Be sure you have a water separator filter, that will cause trouble too.

i have a 1966 110hp inline six mercury outboard

2 coils, 2 points, 2 condenser & 3 carbs

originally it was running fine 3 mos. ago then i ran out of gas 3 miles from the shore. the problem was the diapram busted out on those 2 fuel pump. i rebuilt the 2 fuel pumps and the 3 carbs and i replaced the 6 spark plugs

now my problem is when you re on the driveway with earmuffs on & running water it idles fine, run smooth ,but when you put it to gear it hesitate but
does not backfire, i can see lots of gas coming out from the carbs but doesnt acccelerate right, it boggs down at high rpm?

is this a carbs adjustment problem? i know i have sufficient fuel going in, could it be a spark problem? since i havent touch the breaker points?

any feedback will help what to do on this bulldog?

thnks

Re: no response to my last 3 post

i did play the idle mixture screw and cant get it adjusted right, i know i set the floaters right according to the manual, the compression are good on all, and the sparks are good.

what i cant understand is , it starts easy like first turn of the key, fire right up and idles smooth, only when i rev it up that it hesitates so i was thinking
i may have moved some mechanical parts on the distributor side: like the spark advance , cluster plate, the linkage of the 3 carbs, distributor linkage arm, the gear lever arm and adjustments but all of these i went thru the manual over and over.

what i am not sure is what is the best setting for the carbs between lean or rich?

you mentioned primary/secondary synchronization? im not familiar of this , maybe more info would help.

one more thing i had been doing was i screwed in all the way the idle mixture screw and let it out 1 1/2 turns then adjust everyone of them 1/2 or full turn at a time. i did not expect this settings sensitivity so touchy, i never tried going out or in a tiny bit somewhere 1/8 -1/4 its always 1/2 turn or full turn is what i always do.

is there any other way to synch the carbs?

how do you connect a water seperator, diagram will do and where can i purchase them.?

and for last i asked about the rectifier, i am sure i switched the wires but they are both yellow colors, will that make a difference?
