if you have multimeter, you can do a ohm's check at the wires from the top. just measure across both. you should get about 15 - 16 ohms. each coils has about 7 - 8 ohms resistance across them. If you measure open circuit, big problem. If your reading is way above 16 ohms, you may have a bad conection or a coil about to die. if you get a small reading, then something is shorting out.
