no reverice

i was doing some good fishing yesterday and i thought it was time to go home and i got to the dock and went to put it on the trailer and found i dont have reverice i have a 66rude 40 hp selectric shift what happened and is it bad ?

What oil do you have in that lower unit? I think that is the one that takes special oil, Type C I think. Anyway I would change the oil and see if it work, if not, then it might be one of the selenoids or a wire of one.

is that bad if it is a selenoids and how would check to see if maybe a wire broke i test from the box to the top connector on the engine so it must be below that any tips or ways to check them with out taking it all apart?

You will have to drop the lower unit to get to the wires where they connect with the selenoids, but before you do that there is a plate on I think the left side of the lower unit and is kept in place with 2 screws I think. This is where the wires come apart at to drop lower unit. You may want to disconet there and use a jumper wire to your battery and see if it kicks in then if it does you will know that the problem is between there and the switch. Be careful if you disconect the wires there because they are a little tricky you have to bend them at the disconect and then they will come apart. <br />good luck

if you have multimeter, you can do a ohm's check at the wires from the top. just measure across both. you should get about 15 - 16 ohms. each coils has about 7 - 8 ohms resistance across them. If you measure open circuit, big problem. If your reading is way above 16 ohms, you may have a bad conection or a coil about to die. if you get a small reading, then something is shorting out. Click the red search button at the top. type in electric shift, select j&e engine topics, if you want you can type joe reeves in the last box titled member name. <br /><br />BUY A MANUAL I have a 69 85hp and the factory manual really helps figure things out. You can get them at kencook.com and marineengine.com if you want a factory reprint. iboats is a great place to get an aftermarket manual but I don't know if one of those would be specific enough for your problem. JB would probably have a better idea on that.

make sure you type selectric shift. If you type electric shift, you will get alot of results about the hydro-electric shift as well as selectric shift.
