no reverse after refitting lower unit

Well I'm feeling pretty smug when I read in this forum that if you've never attempted an impellor replacement on a johnson 150 you should allow up to 8 hours, well I was 1 hour dismantle, 1 hour on the impellor and 1 hour reassembling, mostly stuff I didn't need to remove anyway. I haven't touched any of the linkage adjustments but now I don't have reverse, what have I missed? I left reverse engaged while the lower unit was removed thinking that would reduce the chance of the drive shaft turning which wasn't important anyway.
Any help appreciated.

you are not connected correctly to the shift shaft.
