no reverse on my merc.3.0 litre 4 cyl i/o 140 hp engine. do i need to pull the lower unit to replace my reverse shift cable and how extensive is the work? also, is it hurting my boat using it without reverse? i can get away without it until i winterize it. fwd and rev cables are totally seperate, right? thx guys.

inspect the movements of the shift cable at the top aft of the engine. Maybe it's a mater of adjustment.Download the relative service manual.

I am in process of maybe buying a boat with the Merc 165hp engine I/O 1974 and I am told the boat has no reverse.....

How can I check what the cause of this is and what expenses I am looking at before I commit to buying the boat?

Best to start a new thread with your question yachtsmann, otherwise it will get lost as people start answering the original question again, from the original poster.
