no reverse, grinding

need help with 1996 quantum 190xfs mariner 115 hp ob. wont go into reverse and makes a racketing noise when trying to ingage the reverse. ran good and always worked. havent made any repairs or adjustments but if so do i go into the throttle assembly or the motor end?
