I just rebuilt my pontoon from deck up While removing the deck, I mistakenly cut through the control wires, so I bought a new remote control box. Today, when I took it out on the lake, it would only go forward and would go forward if I moved the throttle in the reverse position. When I moved the throttle in the opposite position, the engine revved faster, but did not go into reverse. It took about two months to replace the control, so I could have reversed the throttle and the forward/reverse cable, or not have it adjusted correctly. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

By the way, the motor is a Yamaha 1995 85HP 2 stroke OB C85TLRT. The boat ran fine in forward without any grinding getting into gear etc..

In case anyone was wondering...There was a small decal on the controls which indicated which side of the control was the "front". That decal was out on backwards, so I put the control on backwards. That is why the forward and reverse was switched. To fix it, I turned the control around and I had to swap the shift lever to the other side. I think I had a returned part I was using.

To get the motor to go into reverse, I simply adjusted the fitting on the end of the cable out a few turns so the shift actuator moved back further when the control was put in reverse.
