No reverse, Shift problem ?

I have 1988 Chapparal with Alpha1 Gen2 outdrive converted from OMC. Engine is 5.7 OMC with OMC shifter. I tied my boat to ramp dock. went to get my tow vehicle and trailer. Started the boat and no reverse. Also no neutral, just forward. Any ideas? Thanks.

Drive installed improperly ,shift shoes not lined up. Has any work been done to it?

No work has been done lately or this year. I have had it out this season about 10 times with out any problems.

The shifter is really easy to move now. I can see the shift mechanism seems to be working fine on top of the engine. Are those Sierra
TFXtreme cables good?

I pulled the drive off to inspect shift cable and found no gasket. Previous owner used silicone instead. Also I found this 1/4" gash in the bellhousing. I'm guessing thats why they used silicone. I'm thinking of using marinetex to cover the gash. Also I'm planning to sand down the patch so I can use a gasket to reseal drive. Opions?
