No Reverse

I recently rebuilt my PH and dropped the LU to install a new waterpump.

Shifting was working prior to the work. Now I can't seem to get the prop to engage in reverse. I am having issues with my linkages, but even if I unhook them, I still am not seeming to get reverse constantly. Is it possible the linkage that directly hooks up to the shift rod is connected wrong?

I had to drop the LU 3 times in all, because the first time I put it back, I realized, I hadn't checked the waterpump hose. Then I dropped it again, when I couldn't figure out if the height of the shift rod was correct or not. I measured it per the specs in the manual right before putting it in the last time and I did not move it.

Any ideas??

I should mention at one point when adjusting the shift rod, it seemed to unthread, but it seemed to thread fine and even work, so I don't think that's an issue, but someone else might.

Re: No Reverse

Did you make sure the lower unit was in neutral before adjusting the shift rod? Taking for granted that your engine is a 20" lower unit, the shift rod height in neutral is 22 1/16" from the top of the lower unit to the center line of the hole in the shift rod.

Re: No Reverse

Sorry, in case it is evident by my sig, it's an 86 Evinrude XP 150.

Thanks

Oh and yes, mine is the 20" unit, from what I can tell.

Re: No Reverse

I checked it and it appeared to be in neutral. I pushed the rod down and found what should have been reverse and then up twice which should have been in forward, then I went down one and the prop spun freely. I then measured it with the eye facing forward.

I was careful to do this correct, but I'm starting to wonder. If I can't seem to fix it, I guess I'll drop it again and check. Is that what you are thinking? I sure can't figure anything else out.
