no reverse

I have a Bayliner Capri with a Volvo A125B engine and a 270 out drive .
I notice that the motor won't lock in down position and when in reverse the
drive will kick up and the motor will die. Please advise any help is appreciate.

Don't know what is causing your problem but I do know you want to not make the drive lift.

It has a drive shaft and it will bind, possibly what is causing your motor to stall, eventually this will break so watch reversing till you figure it out.

Thanks for your reply, I"ll make note of that,and just to give more info on the boat the year is a 1983 built 1984 model.

There is a procedure in the manual (don't have it in front of me) that explains how to adjust the reverse locking device. You need to adjust/repair it before attempting to use reverse again.

Do a search on the Mercruiser/Volvo webpage here. That reverse lockdown mechanism is somewhat difficult to work on...springs get broken, other parts get worn down and then you get that kick up effect. Don;t drive it that way or it will break other parts of the drive by the kicking up and pounding down action. Start the new thread on that webpage with something like, VP 270 reverse lockdown problem.
