no RPM'S in barrel, fine? in water..

My 1971 evinrude 18 horse seems to run very poorly in a barrel.. Like it's not getting above like 2000 rpm's. But.. when i hit the lake, it get's right up and goes fine..(i think). I try to start it every week or so if i don't get on the water with it, but it makes me think it won't work well on the water if it acts like this in a barrel.. Freaks me out everytime, and i almost don't dare to take it to the lake..i have only had it out 2 times, and it ran good both. ANy thoughts?.. Thanks

I've had a bunch of those smaller engine that wouldn't tach up in a barrel. I'm no hydrologist but I'd say its because the prop wash has no place to go rearward.

If you run it in a barrel, you probably run it in neutral. When in neutral, the motor is prevented from reaching high rmps by a plunger that stops stator plate from turning at a sudden piont. This stops throttle as well as spark advance and prevents high rev and putting gear at higher revs, to protect gearbox.
