First, a dwell meter is a must. Second if you have an apparent 1/16 play in the shaft it will show up on a dwell meter as a varying dwell. dwell should not change much at all unless the dist is worn out or rpm is beyond the operating range of the points. Now a dwell meter is a lot less than a cylinder leak down tester so go and get one if you want to run points. The advise to replace condensor is good. Also I have been using a digital Snap on advance timing light on automotive and marine engines since I bought it in 1986. First I set dwell. Then I set base timing and then I check full advance which is why I love an advance light.
After all that is done, and I know the engine is good mechanically with a compression test and a cylinder leakdown test, plugs, wires and dist cap are good. then and only then do I mess with a carburetor.
Nothing wrong with an advance digital light I highly recommend them.
