police boat collides with 31 foot contender 4 people on board 2 are sent to the hospital 1 has severe injuries. police boat had no running lights according to witness contender was coming towards dock when police boat t-bones contender. i'll tell you its not uncommon to see or better yet not see running lights on law enforcement boats @ night down here in south florida.in my opinion i guess you are allowed to navigate as you so desire without any safety concern for other boaters when you are the law.I myself had an incident with 3 young coasties in an orange inflatable with twin 250's that decided to pass my in a no wake @ over 30 knots and bounce everybody on board around...

Re: no running lights

Although every mariner is responsible for their wake and any damages caused, sometimes the Coast Guard has a need to get somewhere quick.

Re: no running lights

Must be more to the story. If the police boat was the one that got rammed while having no running lights, understand. So why couldn't they see a 31' Contender which I assumed did have lights?

Well, its not like any contraband ever comes in to South Florida. ;)

Re: no running lights

If the LEOS or Coasties are running without lights, then they are subject to Admiralty court like anyone else. Take them there privately if the higher ups won't dicipline them. There will be repercussions some of the time, but I would do it in a heart beat. I can't stand a dirty cop as my pop was a cop and the dirty ones give the good ones a bad name.

I was a witness to some FAA inspectors that thought they were above the rules. They almost killed a small plane operator by flying straight into an uncontrolled airport without standard procedure. Several of us ground bound observers had to take the stand, but all three of them were dismissed from the service and perminantly lost their licenses.

My rant for the day.

Sometimes these newspaper reports can get the facts all wrong. You will never see it printed but the final report will show that the cabin cruiser was totally at fault. Hull is probably painted black or dark blue and was running totally dark. The lights that the witnesses saw were actually those of the police boat lite up like a christmass tree with blue light flashing. Cruiser deliberately put himself in the way of the police boat that was in hot response to shots fired, illegal netting, screams, fill in the blanks. Am certain somewhere on board the cruiser there was an open bottle of beer, burbon, wine. Serious accident so all on the cruiser were tested for alcohol and although no one was drunk, someone had to be impared. Maby those on the cops boat will also have to submit to a test next week. If there were bottles on the cops boat they were there from previous evidence or sunk at the scene of the accident.
Bottom line is that the capt. of the cruiser intefered with officers while in the line of duty. Hope he has insurance as he has to pay for the damages on both boats plus medical cost. Since they were on duty, the officers get the golden bullet. Injured in the line of duty, long term disability or early retirement and probably a pay grade hike before they walk, heros. Think I am making this up? Late 60s the race to the top of the empire state building was won by a fireman out on disability. regards FRED
