Re: No Sea Trial ????
I totally agree with a sea trial, but one point no one has seemed to consider is what happens if you as the potential buyer screws something up. Even though the boat is insured if you forget to say strap it down at the ramp and dump it on to the concrete. Yes it will be fixed thru ins. but who gets to do ALL of the leg work you do, who gets to explain to the ins. co. what happened you do. A lot of ins. companies can be tricky to deal with if the insured was not the one at fault, so you get weeks of phone calls, adjusters, a busted up boat, that now will never sell until all is resolved, plus your rates may or may not go up. Also there are tons of people out there who would gladly fill the tank in your boat for the chance to go beat the hell out of it for an afternoon only to not really want it. So that means you, to protect yourself must go and do everything thus taking a fair bit of your time which not everyone has tons of. I don't know what the "cut off" line would be but I know when I've sold older boats in the 3k-4k range, it is what it is. I will gladly let you start it, bring a mech.and do whatever in the driveway but no way would I go to the lake a half dozen times on a $3k 20 year old boat I'm selling. My time has got to be worth something. Buying anything used is a gamble imo if you want warrantes, guarantees etc buy from a dealer.
