No serial # tag to identify outboard

I recently purchased a 1986 Edson Commander 17.7 Foot open bow boat. It came with a Mercury Force 90 outboard. One of the previous owners removed the metal tag with the serial # and outboard information. I want to make repairs/maintenance to make sure its kept in prime condition. Did look online but came up short. Is there any other way to identify what year the outboard is? I believe its a 1998 but the previous owner doesn't know anything.

Check the power head for a metal plug or tag. In my opinion there is only one reason why a serial number gets removed.

Looked and I did not see one. Might have missed it. Where on the powerhead is it located?...I truly hope it isn't stolen. I'll be pissed if I was sold stolen equipment
